MacLaine was the daughter of a drama coach and former actress, and a professor of psychology and philosophy. Her brother, Warren Beatty, also grew up to be an important Hollywood figure.
One of the most fascinating characters in Hollywood history, Warren Beatty was born Henry Warren Beaty in Richmond, Virginia on March 30, 1937.
Beatty has been nominated for 15 Academy Awards, including winning the Best Director Award and its highest honor, the Irving G. Thalberg Award. He has been nominated for 16 Golden Globe Awards and won six, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which he received in 2007. Only Beatty and Orson Welles have been nominated for producer, director, writer and actor in the same film. Welles did it once (for Citizen Kane), and Beatty did it twice (for Heaven Can Wait and Reds).
MacLaine earned her first Oscar nomination for ‘Some Came Running’ in 1959. She also appeared with the Rat Pack in ‘Oceans Eleven’ (1960). She won her second nomination for comedy ‘The Apartment’ in 1960, and a third for ‘Irma La Douce’ (1963).
She actively participated in Robert Kennedy 1968 presidential campaign and served as a Democratic Convention delegate. She was similarly involved in George McGovern’s 1972 campaign.
Lester Anthony Minnelli was born into a family of touring entertainers, performing with his brothers from the age of three, much like his first wife Judy Garland, who toured with her sisters at the same age.
He was the youngest of four sons – only two of whom reached adulthood – of Vincent Charles Minnelli, the conductor of Minnelli Brothers Tent Theatre, and Marie Emilie Odile Lebeau, whose stage name was Mina Genell. The family toured Ohio, Illinois and Indiana before settling permanently in Delaware, Ohio. Minnelli was brought up by his paternal grandmother Nina Picket while he attended school and his parents were touring their shows.
